Radon Gas Mitigation
While there are many hazards that can enter your home unseen, radon gas is one of the deadliest. Unlike other issues such as mold or water damage, carcinogenic radon gas has no visible signs and can only be detected with specialized testing kits. Fortunately, with the help of NaturaSeal products and services you can greatly minimize your risk of radon exposure and poisoning.
How Does Radon Gas Get in Your Home?
Radon gas forms when uranium, a naturally occurring element in soil, breaks down. From this soil, radon can seep into your home through a variety of potential entry points, including:
- Cracks in foundation walls and floors caused by water damage or other strain
- Through floor drains and sump pumps
- Other openings formed by hollow support beams, unsealed joints and wall gaps
- Exposed dirt in an unfinished basement is an especially easy way for radon levels in basement to reach critical levels
Health Concerns of Radon Gas
Radon gas is colorless and odorless, but that doesn’t mean it’s not wreaking havoc on your health. The carcinogenic effects of the gas are slow moving, with lung cancer often forming years after exposure. While being a smoker will increase the chances of cancer cells forming in your lungs, radon is the largest cause of lung cancer death in nonsmokers, making it a concern for everyone.
Symptoms of Radon Poisoning: The Center for Disease Control does not list official symptoms, but states that breathing issues, persistent cough, lung infections and wheezing could be a sign of high radon levels.
Testing Radon Levels in Basement
While radon is present both inside and outside your home at fluctuating levels, there are certain standards set for what is a reasonable risk versus one that must be addressed quickly. For the best and most accurate results, you need a professional testing and radon mitigation plan.
With our experience, knowledge and professional equipment, NaturaSeal is certified by the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program (C-NRPP). When you chose us for your radon mitigation needs we’ll come to your home, analyze levels and devise a plan to lower your risk as soon as possible.
Radon Mitigation and Prevention
First, if you have an unfinished basement, consider having it finished. Covering dirt walls and floors will greatly reduce radon’s ability to enter your home. There are also radon mitigation systems you can install. However, the best you can do for your home whether you’ve already had radon detected or you want to prevent the possibility of it, is to apply a protective seal like our RadonShield.

How Quickly Must Radon Mitigation be Done?
The speed at which your radon gas levels must be lowered to reduce your health risks will depend on how high the radon levels in basement and home were. Levels up to 600 Bq/m3 should be reduced within two years. Levels above this should be done within one year or less.
